The Warren Sherman Festival was reborn on September 5 and 6, Labor Day weekend, in the new Inez Nash Park adjacent to the new Wayman Palmer YMCA – a rebirth all the way around.
“A strong organization of residents, Warren Sherman strives to bring together partners, officials, leaders and residents in a cohesive network to grow the neighborhood and the people who call it home,” wrote Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur in a plaque of congratulations.
On Saturday, the Skip Turner Band was the featured artist as music blanketed the area from noon to 8 p.m.
On Sunday, the games continued along with the bouncy houses. Wanda Love of the Warren Sherman Community Organization held a memorial service and recognition for some of the individuals who have been community standouts over the years.
A Warren Sherman Community Family plaque was initiated for longtime community members Johnnie R. Love; Ivadelle “Ivy” Bey; Rev. Lee S. Love; Amos Sanders; Betty Amison and Betty Landry.
“We have always been a family,” noted Wanda Love as she explained that room has been left on the plaque to add other community members in the future.
A separate plaque will be presented to Greater St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church to commemorate the life of Johnnie Love, Wanda’ husband and the Minister of Music at the church, who passed this year.
Henry and Joanne Triplett were honored with a plaque for their years of service and the retail business, Henry’s Jewelry, that started at the Bancroft/Franklin Street mall years ago – “the first store in our plaza,” said Wanda Love.
“It takes a lot to build a community; it takes everyone working together,” she added in closing. “We have no intention of losing our history in this community.”
