Candice Harrison, the external communications manager for Toledo Public Schools, has been named the president of the Press Club of Toledo, the first Black president of the Club. She will be inducted during the Press Club’s board of directors virtual meeting on February 9.
The Press Club, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year, actively promotes the advancement of ethical journalism while examining issues shaping journalism today. The Club also seeks to enhance fellowship among journalists and increase collaboration with those in various areas such as business, education, politics, among others.
Harrison is also the owner of Synergy Engagement, a communications, public relations and engagement firm which provides communications solutions to aid organization and individuals amplify their brand and messages.
Harrison is the former director of communications for the Toledo Museum of Art and the former senior communications manager for the Toledo Zoo an Aquarium. She was honored with the 20 Under 40 in Leadership Award in 2014 and a Top Community Voices Award from United Way of Greater Toledo in 2013 in recognition of her extensive community involvement
She has previously been director of communications for the Toledo Museum of Art and, prior to that, senior communications manager for the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium.
In addition to the Press Club Board, she currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Rotary Club of Toledo and the Arts Commission. She is also a member of the Toledo chapter of Links, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and the Toledo chapter of Jack and Jill of America, where she serves as vice president.
A native Toledoan and graduate of Central Catholic High School, Harrison received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo and her master’s degree from Spring Arbor University.
