For jazz lovers in the Glass City, this past week was truly a blessing. A weeklong series of jazz shows in a variety of venues was capped off by an outdoor all-day free festival at the new Glass City Metropark on Saturday.
The six days of music brought a host of local and regional artists to Toledo stages.
The week began at the Peacock Café on Monroe Street with music by the Signal Quartet on Monday, August 7. On Tuesday the Jerome Clark Trio held forth at Toledo Spirits on Summit Street.
Angela Davis appeared on Wednesday at the Glass City Metropark’s Market Hall and Ellie Martin on Thursday sang t Manhattan’s Pun ‘n Cheer on Adams Street.
On Friday, the JazzWeek concluded with an appearance by trumpeter Allen Dennard at Lucille’s Jazz Lounge.
On Saturday, hundreds of jazz lovers headed to Glass City Metropark outdoor theatre for a beautiful summer’s day of jazz. The free festival kicked off at noon with keyboardist John Cunningham; percussionist Sammy DeLeon at 1:30 pm; vocalist Ramona Collins at 3; electro jazz ensemble Four80East at 4:30 pm; Jeanette Harris & David P. Stevens at 6; and Jeff Lorber Fusion at 7:30 p.m. to close out the day.
This year’s JazzFest and Festival were sponsored by the City of Toledo, Lucas County, Metroparks Toledo, TARTA, Fifth Third Bank, Destination Toledo, Taylor Automotive, SJS Investment Consulting, the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo and the Great Lakes Jazz Society.
