Residents will soon begin seeing the first improvements along the Vistula section of Summit Street after the City of Toledo was selected as one of only five communities nationwide to receive a GM on Main Street Grant. The grant will fund interim traffic calming and pedestrian safety improvements between Cherry and Olive streets, including a lane reconfiguration, temporary median islands, and new pavement markings designed to slow traffic and strengthen connections between Toledo’s oldest neighborhood and the Maumee Riverfront.
While these improvements are important on their own, they represent the beginning of a much larger vision for Toledo’s oldest neighborhood.
For years, Vistula has been steadily revitalized through both public and private investment. Projects such as the Wonder Bread Lofts, TolHouse, Toledo Pickle, and Toledo Spirits have brought new energy to the neighborhood. Public investments are also moving Vistula forward, including the full reconstruction of Water Street last year and the start of construction this year on the Vistula portion of the $250 million Glass City Riverwalk project, which will bring new green space, riverfront trails, and improved public access to the Maumee River.
As these investments continue, the City is planning future improvements to Summit Street that will create a safer, more walkable corridor, strengthen connections throughout the neighborhood, and improve access to the riverfront. Together, these projects are building on Vistula’s historic character while creating a neighborhood that is more connected, more accessible, and well positioned for continued growth.
