Black-Owned Businesses – And What Makes Them Work: Shelmon Group, LLC

Theodis Shelmon – Shelmon Group, LLC

Business Owner – Theodis Shelmon

How would you describe your business in your own words?

We install concrete for residential properties.

What industry would you consider your business?

Concrete installation – pouring patios, basement floors, garages etc.

When did your business open?

The early 80s

            Who started the business? Why?

I was working for a union [in the early 80s]. It was hard to get work as a black contractor. I was never one of the first ones to get called and I then I would always be the first one to get laid off. I said things have to change. So, I decided to go into business for myself so that way I could control if I was working or not.

How did you get started in the industry?

My dad worked in construction. When I was in high school they would have me baby sit the concrete that they laid keeping kids from stepping in it. I really wish more young people would become more interested in trades.

Who operates the business now? (Is it family owned)?

Myself, my brothers, nephews and cousins

         What services do you offer?

We do it all. Front porches, sidewalk repairs, steps, foundation cracks, basement floor garages etc. We also do free estimates.

        What makes your business unique?

We try to make ourselves available and try to price it so that people can afford it. We try to help people. When they call us, they know they’re going to get a fair price.

Do you have plans to grow or expand your business in the future?

I’m looking to train the next generation of concrete workers. I’m looking for young people who are interested in learning the trade and to start subbing work out.
