Community Partnership Connects Toledo Public Schools to STEM

Project Discovery aims to introduce all TPS third graders to the wonders of science

TOLEDO, Ohio – It takes one spark; one “ah-ha” moment to inspire a child to explore more. Imagination Station is determined to make that moment a reality for all third-grade students in Toledo Public Schools.

In 2019, Imagination Station received a three-year grant from the KeyBank Foundation for Project Discovery. This program is designed to complement the science curriculum and standards in Toledo Public Schools and build literacy skills at the same time. After the pandemic delayed delivery, the science center is excited to announce the start of this amazing collaboration.

“Imagination Station’s goal is to make our exciting, hands-on approach to learning easily accessible. Project Discovery allows us to engage in multiple learning opportunities with students,” said Imagination Station’s Director of Educational Advancement, Sloan Eberly Mann. “These experiences can be defining moments for students, and to be able to include their families in the learning is extremely important.”

Through the program, all TPS third-graders will experience Science Festivals at their schools and receive classroom kits. Students will also visit the science center to explore exhibits and attractions and see a 3D film in the KeyBank Discovery Theater. They will also participate in a Think Tank workshop during their visit, focused on developing their understanding of circuits and electricity.

“KeyBank is thrilled to welcome students from Toledo Public Schools to experience the new Discovery Theater at Imagination Station,” said KeyBank Toledo Market President Jim Hoffman. “The state-of-the-art theater is an opportunity to inspire and educate children of all ages. We are proud to support their innovative, interactive and inspirational approach that brings learning to life.”

Additionally, Project Discovery includes teacher professional development, a Family Science Night that includes a meal and an evening at Imagination Station and books for every third grader in TPS.
