Black History Spotlighted in Zora Neal Hurston Stage Showcase

Northwest Ohio’s oldest independent Black theatre organization will observe Black History Month by bringing a classic author’s work to the Maumee Indoor Theater Feb. 16-17.

New Works Writers Series will present two 8 p.m. performances of “Tales of Zora Neal Hurston” Friday and Saturday at the venue, located at 601 Conant St.

The live show marks the second production in an exciting, year-long partnership that brings New Works’ talent to the attention of audiences at the historic Maumee landmark, says Dr. Imelda Hunt.

“We encourage old and new patrons of the Maumee Indoor Theater, along with New Works Writers Series supporters, to enjoy this show,” adds Hunt, New Works’ founder and artistic director. “Zora Neal Hurston’s work has placed her among not only the greatest Black storytellers, but among the storytellers Americans continue to discover decades after her death. Black History Month is a great opportunity to introduce her work in a live performance.”

Best known for her 1937 novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, which was made into a TV film starring actress Halle Berry, Hurston also wrote at least 50 short stories, plays and essays. New Works presentation, “Tales of Zora Neal Hurston,” stars Richard Brown III, Curtis Smith, Johnnelle Terrell and Nahla Palmer-Wilson, Tisha Carroll, featuring choreography by Tonya Steward.
