TPS Announces Temporary Suspension of Head Start Services

Toledo Public Schools is being forced to pause a majority of its successful Head Start and Early Childhood Education programs due to the prolonged government shutdown. As a result of TPS not receiving its December 1 federal award notification, operations will be suspended starting on December 1.

This service hiatus will affect more than 1,000 students enrolled in TPS-sponsored programs, as well as 124 employees.

Pre-K classes funded through the federal Title I program are not affected.

The success of Head Start and Early Childhood Education, both locally and nationally, is well documented. These programs are among America’s most effective investments, with long-term benefits and documented measures of success.

Students make significant progress in language, literacy, and math by the end of the program year, demonstrating improved academic, social-emotional, and school readiness outcomes.

Studies also show positive impacts on social-emotional functioning, including better self-control and reduced problem behaviors, that can persist into later grades and even adulthood.
