World AIDS Day 2024: Addressing HIV/AIDS in the African American Community

On December 4, 2024, the Toledo Alumnae and Epsilon Omicron Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will host Ladies Night Out at the West Toledo Library to mark World AIDS Day. With the theme “Put People First,” this event seeks to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS in African American communities, especially in Lucas County, where they represent 46 percent of HIV cases despite making up only 17 percent of the population.

African American women are particularly vulnerable, often due to male partners engaging in “down low” behavior, where relationships with other men are hidden. However, this is part of a broader issue, involving stigma, limited healthcare access, and other structural barriers. Additionally, sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis are closely associated with HIV transmission, but many in the community are unaware of this link. This program is designed to educate and empower individuals to prevent HIV and understand the risks of other related diseases.

This event will provide interactive activities, expert-led discussions, swag bags, raffles, and refreshments. Join us from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the West Toledo Library for an evening of fun, education, and empowerment. Together, we can put people first, reduce stigma, and help create a healthier, more informed community.
