In the heart of Toledo, Ohio, Pastor Robert Bass has devoted over 21 years to leading the United Missionary Baptist Church. He embodies the belief that faith, education, art and wellness are essential pillars for empowering individuals and uplifting communities. Through his roles as a pastor and the Dean of Students at the Toledo School for the Arts (TSA), Bass emphasizes how these elements can transform lives.

Faith: A Guiding Light

Faith is at the core of Pastor Bass’ life. Introduced to the church by his grandmother and mother, he embraced his calling to ministry early on. “Whatever I do, I do with a sense of faith believing all things are possible,” he asserts. His faith inspires others to find hope and purpose, reminding them that they are not alone in their struggles.

In a time when many are searching for meaning, faith can provide a sense of belonging and direction. ”Our church has adapted to the changing landscape of today by embracing both in-person and online services,” says Bass. “It’s a blessing to have the chance to connect with a broader audience than ever before.” This adaptability is a testament to the power of community and connection, even in challenging times.

Education: A Gateway to Opportunity

Education is like a key that opens doors to countless possibilities. Bass knows this well. “For the past 10 years, I’ve been an educator in various charter schools,” he reflects. His experience in education has shown him that learning is not just about academics; it’s about fostering a love for knowledge and helping students navigate life.

Bass has a skill set that intersects ministry, program development, and education. This unique blend allows him to support others in their growth while also creating programs that truly make a difference in our community.

“I served as the director of Business and Program Development at Owens Community College prior to joining TSA,” he shares.

At TSA, Bass is part of a dynamic environment where students engage in rigorous academic curricula alongside the arts. This combination is crucial because it nurtures creativity and critical thinking. “We make sure our students are achieving at the highest level possible,” he says, underscoring his commitment to their success. By encouraging students to explore their talents, Bass helps them understand that education can be a launchpad for their dreams.

The Power of Art: Expression and Healing

Art is not just a subject at TSA; it’s a lifeline. Through music, dance, theater and visual arts, students find a voice to express their emotions and experiences. “Our students work with professional artists to expand their arts experiences,” Bass explains, highlighting the importance of mentorship in creative fields.

Art serves as a powerful tool for healing, especially for those grappling with challenges. For many young people, art can provide an outlet to process their feelings, share their stories, and connect with others. Bass understands from personal experience that when students engage in artistic expression, they gain confidence and a sense of belonging.

“I have two daughters who graduated from TSA. I couldn’t be prouder of their growth and accomplishments.”

Lifelong Learning: Embracing Curiosity

Lifelong learning is another crucial aspect that Bass highlights. Education shouldn’t stop at graduation; it’s a continuous journey, much like climbing a mountain. Each step taken—whether through formal education, self-study or learning from experiences—brings new perspectives and opportunities. Bass’ current pursuit of a doctorate in education reflects his commitment to this principle.

“Right now, I’m in the vital stages of completing my dissertation in Education and Organizational Leadership. It’s a challenging journey, but I believe it will empower me to continue to lead more effectively,” he shares.

Bass believes that when adults model a love for learning, they inspire younger generations to seek knowledge throughout their lives. Encouraging curiosity allows individuals to adapt to changes and challenges. In a rapidly evolving world, those who remain open to learning are better equipped to navigate life’s obstacles.

“Whatever I do, I do with a sense of faith believing all things are possible,” Bass often reminds his congregation, instilling in them the belief that their growth can be limitless if they remain curious and dedicated to learning.

With regards to leadership, Bass suggests that you must be a people person to be truly effective. Understanding and connecting with others is key to inspiring change and building strong relationships. “I believe being a people person has made me more effective as a leader and pastor. When you genuinely care about others, they can feel it, which creates trust and fosters a positive environment for everyone,” he says.

Mental Health: A Foundation for Growth

Mental health is an often-overlooked aspect of education and community well-being. As a board member of the Zepf Center, the largest mental health agency in northwest Ohio, Bass is acutely aware of the challenges many face.

“It’s important to ask yourself what drives you beyond just money. Finding your true motivation can lead to a more fulfilling life and impact those around you in genuinely meaningful ways,” he suggests.

In a world where stress and anxiety can overwhelm youth, fostering a culture of mental well-being is crucial. Bass’ dual roles allow him to advocate for mental health resources that help students feel safe and supported. When young people know they can seek help, they are more likely to thrive academically and personally.

The Synergy of Faith and Learning

The threads of faith, education, art and mental health are deeply intertwined. Each aspect supports and enhances the others, creating a holistic framework for growth. In the Black community, where historical barriers to education and mental health resources persist, embracing this interconnectedness can spark significant change.

“’By prioritizing passion, positivity and integrity—my three guiding principles—I hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams and to uplift those around them,” shares Bass.

And he does just that. He skillfully weaves these threads together. Through his leadership at TSA and in his church, Bass touches lives in multiple dimensions, demonstrating that nurturing young minds and spirits is essential for true community development.

A Call to Action

Together, we can empower the next generation to reach heights we can only imagine, fostering a spirit of collaboration and support that transcends barriers and inspires innovation, he suggests.

As we consider the roles we each play, we must ask ourselves how we can contribute to this transformative work. Whether it’s volunteering, advocating for wellness resources, or supporting local arts initiatives, each action counts.

In the words of Pastor Bass, “If you love people and building relationships, anything is possible.”
