By Ohio State Senator Paula Hicks Hudson
Today is just as busy as yesterday! Senator Corey Booker and Rep
James Clyburn came to our breakfast caucus this morning. Each one
reminded us of this historic time with the presidential nomination of
Kamala Harris. Rep Clyburn praised our own Joyce Beatty for her leadership
as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Each day there are caucus meetings where we learn about the platform and
policies that the groups have. We also hear about strategies to support
and engage.
This afternoon I participated in a press conference with legislators from
Arizonia, Iowa and Wisconsin to compare how these states have created fair
maps. As the Senate Domestic representative, I spoke about how we are in a
fight for our democracy, where politicians are trying to suppress the vote
of the people.
With the constitutional amendment in, Issue 1, on the November ballot in Ohio, this was a perfect time to hear from them as they described the success and challenges. It is clear that fair maps will improve voter participation, more candidates willing to run and better government.
I am currently on one of the shuttles taking us to the United Center arena
where we will have the roll call for our Party’s nomination.
However the highlight will be hearing from former President and First Lady
Obama!! I can’t wait! The downside is the crowded shuttles/long lines.
The evening program has been filled with surprises! Patti Labelle, Common
and Johnathan McReynolds. The excitement as each state answers the roll
call casting their votes for Kamala Harris. The Georgia delegation rocked
the arena with Jon Lee!
The second gentleman spoke about his wife and their blended family. It was
touching as he described how their children call her Momala
But everyone was waiting for President and Michele Obama. Michelle said
“Hope is making a Comeback!” President Obama made the case for our nation
being united. When the audience booed about Trump, he said “Don’t
Boo, Vote!”
It was another great night!
