The Democratic Women in Action had a busy week. On Tuesday August 6, members of the political action group that was founded 10 years ago, held their executive committee meeting at Mott Branch library. On Friday, August 9, the group, along with sponsors and supporters, gathered at the Whiteford Valley Golf Course for their annual four-person golf scramble.
About 30 golfers checked in for the 9:00 a.m. shotgun start and a day of golf, lunch, prizes and contests. The proceeds from the fees and the sponsorships will go to the YWCA Domestic Violence Center.
The Democratic Women began donating proceeds from its fundraising efforts 10 years ago, said group president Essie Wiggins. The donations are part of the strategy the group undertook to donate accumulated funds to community projects, said Wiggins.
Wiggins founded the DWIA in order to bring like-minded women together to help on elections, to assist on outreach to community projects and to support women candidates. There are about 40 members of the DWIA.
