Black liberation has never just been about Black people. It\u2019s been about a fight for our humanity, for our dignity. \u2013 <\/em>Patrisse Cullors<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

An illustrious history of Jewish and African American collaboration exists in our communities\u2019 shared struggles. American Jews helped found and fund some of our most important civil rights organizations, including the NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and others. Jewish activists also made up a disproportionate number of white people involved in the Civil Rights Movement, including those who participated in the momentous Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964.<\/p>\n

Although more work is needed, in the spirit of our communities\u2019 long and fruitful partnership, Daniel Pearlman, Vice President of the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Greater Toledo, offers the following \u201cJewish Prayer for Juneteenth<\/em>\u201d written by married Rabbis Hillel and Sharon Barr Skolnik:<\/p>\n

Our G-d<\/em><\/p>\n

Compassionate redeemer,<\/em><\/p>\n

Emancipator,<\/em><\/p>\n

Liberator of the oppressed, downtrodden and enslaved.<\/em><\/p>\n

You\u00a0heard<\/u>\u00a0our ancestors\u2019 cries as slaves in Egypt<\/em><\/p>\n

Freed<\/u><\/em>\u00a0us from harsh labors with an outstretched arm,<\/em><\/p>\n

Delivered<\/u><\/em>\u00a0us from bondage,<\/em><\/p>\n

Took<\/u><\/em>\u00a0us to be\u00a0your<\/u>\u00a0people,<\/em><\/p>\n

And\u00a0brought<\/u>\u00a0us to\u00a0our\u00a0<\/u>Promised Land.<\/em><\/p>\n

You heard the cries of Black slaves in\u00a0this<\/u>\u00a0country.<\/em><\/p>\n

Freed<\/u><\/em>\u00a0them officially on this day with an outstretched arm.<\/em><\/p>\n

May you continue to:<\/em><\/p>\n

Deliver<\/u><\/em>\u00a0us from the bondage of injustice;<\/em><\/p>\n

Take<\/u><\/em>\u00a0us to be your people, treated by all with love and equity,<\/em><\/p>\n

And\u00a0bring<\/u>\u00a0us to a moment when this Land fulfills its Promises.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ever-listening, attentive One:<\/em><\/p>\n

Hear us now.<\/em><\/p>\n

The journey has been long,<\/em><\/p>\n

The steps arduous and ongoing.<\/em><\/p>\n

But we celebrate freedom this day:<\/em><\/p>\n

With love,<\/em><\/p>\n

Memory,<\/em><\/p>\n

Honor,<\/em><\/p>\n

Resolve to be a force for positive change and fervent hope for freedoms still yet to be realized.<\/em><\/p>\n

As you have shown us compassion, help us to be compassionate.<\/em><\/p>\n

As you have liberated us, help us\u00a0stand up against injustice everywhere<\/u>.<\/em><\/p>\n

As you have delivered us, help\u00a0us<\/u>\u00a0fight for freedom for all\u00a0still enslaved<\/u>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Remember us, hear us, and be with us always.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

And let us say \u2026. Amen.<\/em><\/p>\n
