Central State University is a partner institution on a $10 million award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture, through the From Learning to Leading: Cultivating the Next Generation of Diverse Food and Agriculture Professionals (NEXTGEN) [1<\/a>] program.<\/p>\n

A coalition of two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs),
\nCentral State University and Lincoln University; one Hispanic-serving
\ninstitution (HSI), Texas A&M University; and one Research University (RIU),
\nMissouri University of Science and Technology are working together on
\naward-winning project, \u201cHBCU-HSI-RIU Consortium: A Synergistic Paradigm
\nfor Training the Next Generation Agriculture Workforce for a Sustainable
\nFuture\u201d.<\/p>\n

The project aims to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, nationwide
\nlabor shortages, climate change, increasing food safety concerns, and the
\nunder-representation of minorities in agriculture-related fields. Team
\nmembers from partner institutions consist of research, education, and
\nextension professionals to maximize the impact on minority populations from
\ngrades K-12 to graduate school.<\/p>\n

Dr. Hongmei Li-Byarlay, research associate professor of entomology and
\nproject director for Pollinator Health, Agricultural Research Development
\nProgram, serves as the principal investigator (PI) for Central State. The
\nCentral State co-PIs are Drs. Sakthi Kumaran Subburayalu, Sharath Krishna,
\nand Prosper Doamekpor \u2014 each of whom has a wealth of knowledge and
\nexpertise in agriculture and minority workforce development.<\/p>\n

Central State\u2019s major project goal is to establish an inter-institutional
\ncollaborative graduate program that emphasizes soil sciences and
\nentomology. This initiative complements Central State\u2019s existing programs
\nin sustainable agriculture [2<\/a>], water resources management [3<\/a>],
\nenvironmental engineering [4<\/a>], and experiential learning. Undergraduate
\nstudents currently conduct research in soil conservation, integrated pest
\nmanagement, pollinator health, horticulture, and other relevant topics.<\/p>\n

In addition to the new graduate program, the project will support courses
\non precision agriculture and drone application, yearly geospatial
\ninformation science activities, a summer workshop on regenerative
\nagriculture, professional learning and scholarships, youth programming, and
\nother related initiatives across the four consortium institutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NEXTGEN project presents an exciting opportunity for Central State
\nto increase its impact on the next generation of agricultural workers by
\nsupporting increased minority participation and knowledge attainment. The
\ngrant will also help us to recruit outstanding students for the
\nagricultural workforce,\u201d said Li-Byarlay.<\/p>\n
