The New Works Writers Series presented \u201cAugust Wilson: Milestone in Black Theatre,\u201d and read <em>Fences<\/em> to celebrate the playwright and recognize Black Theatre Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite having such notables as actor Denzel Washington featured in the film and sage versions of his work, August Wilson\u2019s Pulitzer Prize-winning legacy is not fully appreciated,\u201d said Imelda Hunt, founder of the New Works Writers Series. \u201cBlack Theatre Day is the perfect opportunity for both those familiar and those unfamiliar with Wilson to come out and support the arts and experience the depth of his talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Known for other plays such as <em>The Piano Lesson<\/em> and <em>King Hadley II<\/em>, Wilson captured Black America\u2019s evolution in dramatic works representing a century. In a manner similar to open mic poetry, \u201cAugust Wilson: Milestones in Black Theatre\u201d invited participants from throughout northwest Ohio to join New Works thespians in reading from selected Wilson writings or performing monologues from his plays.<\/p>\n<p>A packed room at the Truth Gallery listened as the New Works\u2019 artists reenacted the <em>Fences <\/em>tale.<\/p>\n<p>Featured artists included actresses Vicky Brooks and Crystal Darnell, actors Richard Brown, Tillman Johnson and Rasheed Akparibo.<\/p>\n<p>Black Theatre Day was launched by the Lexington, Mass-based Craft Institute, a collective of scholars and artists.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6477\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG_5317-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG_5317-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG_5317-333x250.jpg 333w, https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG_5317.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Special to The Truth Northwest Ohio\u2019s oldest independently operating Black theatre organization hosted a staged community reading at the Truth Gallery on September 17 as part of a nationwide observance.
