{"id":4960,"date":"2022-05-12T16:24:33","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T16:24:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/?p=4960"},"modified":"2022-05-12T16:24:33","modified_gmt":"2022-05-12T16:24:33","slug":"toledo-community-foundation-providing-grants-for-community-nonprofits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/index.php\/2022\/05\/12\/toledo-community-foundation-providing-grants-for-community-nonprofits\/","title":{"rendered":"Toledo Community Foundation Providing Grants for Community Nonprofits"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_4961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4961\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4961\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Artisha-Lawson-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Artisha-Lawson-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Artisha-Lawson-179x250.jpg 179w, https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Artisha-Lawson.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artisha Lawson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><strong>By Fletcher Word<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>Sojourner\u2019s Truth Editor<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 2020 the Board of Trustees of the Greater Toledo Community Foundation approved plans for an Equity &amp; Access Initiative to address the concerns of those Toledo area communities that are adversely affected to such a large extent by inequity and lack of access to resources available to the general community.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last year, the Foundation has awarded $262,480 in grants through two rounds of funding to nine area nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n<p>In March of this year the Board voted to commit an additional $300,000 over the next three years to local nonprofits that are typically minority-led and that are committed to the work of lifting up individuals and groups in communities that are underserved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to remove barriers, particularly for nonprofits that serve such communities,\u201d said Artisha Lawson, program officer at the Foundation and the lead staff person on this initiative fund. \u201cWe are scaling up to reach nonprofits that have never applied before or have not considered applying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Lawson explained the reasoning behind the board\u2019s decision, the Foundation has long been in the practice of focusing on areas or communities in which a lack of equity exists. However, so many smaller, minority-led groups which service those communities have not reached out to explore the opportunities offered by the Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have over 40 competitive grants,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd the majority already align with our diversity and equity goals. However, there are groups that work on these matters who may not think they are eligible and therefore have not applied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The impetus for the Equity &amp; Access Initiative Fund said Board Member Pariss Coleman was the turmoil in the nation in the wake of the George Floyd murder.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4962\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4962\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Pariss-Coleman-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Pariss-Coleman-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Pariss-Coleman-179x250.jpg 179w, https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Pariss-Coleman.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pariss Coleman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was 2020, George Floyd had been killed and there were a lot of corporate statements from CEOs around the world. At the Foundation Board, we were having discussions about the state of civil rights and about police violence against Black men,\u201d recalled Coleman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeith Burwell [CEO of the Foundation] said: \u2018rather than make a statement, we need to do something.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What evolved from that discussion, said Coleman, was a plan to reach out to those small, mainly minority-led nonprofits that exist to serve their communities and an effort \u201cto do what we can to educate the minority community about the Foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those smaller nonprofits, said Coleman, introduced to the Foundation through the Equity &amp; Access Initiative Fund, would develop the opportunity and the capacity to become eligible for ongoing grants in the future<\/p>\n<p>More information about GTCF&#8217;s Equity &amp; Access Initiative Fund can be found at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.toledocf.org\/equity-access-initiative\/\">www.toledocf.org\/equity-access-initiative\/<\/a>. The grant opportunity will opened for applications on<br \/>\nMay 2, 2022 and will close on July 2, 2022.
