He developed resistors for electronic components that made the production of televisions and computers much more affordable, but Boykin became best known for improving the pacemaker. The pacemaker uses electrical impulses to help people maintain a regular heartbeat. Boykin came up with a control unit that regulated the pacemaker with more precision. He died of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #005cb7;\">heart failure <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">in 1982. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt;\">Daniel Hale Williams (1856\u20131931) <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">After apprenticing with a surgeon, Daniel Hale Williams earned a medical degree and started working as a surgeon in Chicago in 1884. Because of discrimination, hospitals at that time barred Black doctors from working on staff. So Dr. Williams opened the nation\u2019s first Black-owned interracial hospital. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">Provident Hospital offered training to African American interns and established America\u2019s first school for Black nurses. On July 10, 1893, Williams successfully repaired the pericardium (the sac surrounding the heart) of a man who had been stabbed in a knife fight. The operation is considered to be the first documented successful open-heart surgery on a human, and Williams is regarded as the first African American <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #005cb7;\">cardiologist<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">He went on to cofound the National Medical Association, and became the first Black physician admitted to the American College of Surgeons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt;\">Michelle Obama (b. 1964) <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">As the first Black First Lady (2009\u20132017) of the United States, Michelle Obama devoted much of her energy to promoting physical health. She brought attention to the childhood obesity epidemic with her <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #005cb7;\">Let\u2019s Move <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">initiative, which encouraged young people to exercise and eat nutritious food. When Obama launched the program in 2010, she said, \u201cThe physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">Obama also worked to increase <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #005cb7;\">access to healthier food <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">and improve food labeling. She championed the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #005cb7;\">Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">, which promotes healthier school lunches and funds meal programs for poor children. Along with current First Lady Jill Biden, Obama launched the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #005cb7;\">Joining Forces <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #323232;\">program to support veterans and their families with access to health services. She is also a strong advocate for women\u2019s health issues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\" style=\"page-break-before: always;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #111111;\">Vivien Thomas<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #111111;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\" style=\"page-break-before: always;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #111111;\">Doctor Vivien Theodore Thomas (August 29, 1910 \u2013 November 26, 1985) was an African-American surgical technician who helped developed a procedure used to treat <b>blue baby syndrome (now known as cyanotic heart disease) in the 1940s<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"Default\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: red;\">Family History and Heart Disease, Stroke <\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">Is heart disease or stroke in your family? If so, your risk may be higher. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">Did your father have a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #324bd4;\">stroke<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">? Did your mother have a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #324bd4;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">? Did any of your grandparents have <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #324bd4;\">heart disease<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">Those might seem like random questions, but they\u2019re very important when it comes to understanding your risk for these diseases. Knowing your family\u2019s health history can help you avoid both heart disease and stroke \u2013 the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in America. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">\u201cBoth the risk of heart disease and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #324bd4;\">risk factors for heart disease <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">are strongly linked to family history,\u201d said William Kraus, M.D., a preventive cardiologist and research scientist at Duke University \u201cIf you have a stroke in your family, you are more likely to have one.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">How much family history do you need to know? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">Dr. Kraus, who is also a volunteer for the American Heart Association, said you should share your family history with your healthcare provider as soon as possible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">If you don\u2019t know the full history, start with your immediate family. Find out if your brothers, sisters, parents or grandparents had heart disease or stroke and how old they were when they developed these diseases. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">If I have a family history, what can I do about it? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">Your family history provides a picture of the environment and genetics in place when these diseases occurred. \u201cYou can\u2019t counteract your genetics,\u201d Dr. Kraus said, and so if you have a history you must do what you can to change your environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">That means lowering your risk by changing behaviors that can increase your chances of getting heart disease or stroke. \u201cIt\u2019s good, healthy living \u2013 the more that can be ingrained in your family, the more impact it has,\u201d Dr. Kraus said. \u201cA patient should encourage better eating habits, physical activity and eliminating smoking.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">Other genetic factors to be aware of. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\" style=\"page-break-before: always;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">Even if your family has a clean bill of health, you should be aware of other genetic factors that can increase your family\u2019s risk. For example, statistics show that African-Americans face higher risks for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #324bd4;\">high blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #324bd4;\">diabetes <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #324bd4;\">stroke<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: #212228;\">.
