Here’s How to Prepare for Your Consultation

By Dr. Hope Mitchell, MD

The Truth Contributor

It’s Hair Loss Awareness Month. One of the most common questions I hear from patients is, “Will my hair grow back?”

The answer depends on identifying what is causing the hair loss. Hair thinning is not a diagnosis. It is a symptom that can have many causes, including hormonal changes, stress, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid disorders, certain medications, autoimmune conditions, genetics and years of tension from certain hairstyles.

Because there are so many possible causes, your initial consultation is an important step in making an accurate diagnosis and developing the right treatment plan.

Before your appointment at Mitchell Dermatology, there are a few steps you can take to help us make the most of your consultation.

If you have already completed bloodwork, bring a copy of your results or make sure they are available through your medical patient portal that you can pull up on your mobile device. Also confirm you can quickly access your account so that your medical history, current medications, and recent results are available for review.

I also encourage you to look through your phone for photographs that show how your hair has changed over time. Choose photos from previous months or years that clearly show your hairline, temples, part, crown or overall fullness. Place the photos into a single album or folder so they are organized and ready to review during your consultation.

To make an accurate diagnosis, I must be able to examine your entire scalp, not just the areas where you have noticed thinning. Please – no confined hairstyles! Arrive with your hair in a style that can be easily moved or parted so that your hairline, temples, sides, crown, back of the scalp and the areas between can be easily examined. A comprehensive history and complete scalp examination helps me identify the pattern and cause of your hair loss.

Before your visit, make a list of your current medications, supplements, recent illnesses, major life changes, and other health concerns. Even details that may not seem related can provide important clues about what may be contributing to your hair loss.

Many people assume hair thinning is simply part of getting older or believe there is nothing that can be done. Many forms of hair loss can be treated or slowed, especially when identified early.

Preparing for your consultation allows dermatologists to spend more time identifying the cause of your hair loss and discussing treatment options that may be appropriate for you. If you are concerned about hair thinning or hair loss, do not wait to seek an evaluation. The sooner the underlying cause is identified, the sooner treatment can begin.

Dr. Hope Mitchell
Board Certified Dermatologist with Over 25 Years of Experience

419.872.HOPE
MitchellDermatology.com
815 Commerce Drive | Perrysburg

Healthy Skin Begins with HOPE!

By Dr. Hope Mitchell, MD The Truth Contributor It’s Hair Loss Awareness Month.
