The fundraiser comes at a critical time for public media in America, which is facing unprecedented financial strain due to recent government action. Most recently Congress passed the Rescissions Act, cutting $1.1 billion in federal funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the agency that distributes public media grants.

WGTE Public Media has rooted itself in the Toledo region for civic engagement, culture, education and local storytelling. WGTE’s programming reflects that mission, with several locally produced shows and specials that explore topics ranging from history and the arts to justice and local affairs.

Its WGTE Presents series spotlights local organizations and cultural events helping to elevate the work of regional artists and community leaders. The station looks to strengthen these efforts in lieu of the financial threat “ We will make sure to check every box when it comes to our target demographics and give everyone in this community a voice on our platforms” states Marcus Harrison, WGTE Director of Marketing.

The station is on the mission to expand regional representation, foster public dialogue, support underrepresented voices, and provide educational content. WGTE’s expansion into modern media access: its WGTE HD channel is now available on streaming platforms such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, DIRECTV STREAM, and Local Now, making its local and national programming more accessible to viewers.

The WGTE staff wore branded t-shirts for the fundraiser with the message “defunded not defeated” which they are keeping in spirit as they continue to press forward for new programs. Harrison said “WGTE will be very intentional in how we continue to connect with the communities we serve.”

The station’s website offers information on their current programming for tv, podcast, radio and streaming. The station also provides opportunities to support through donation, production services and membership opportunities that can be found on WGTE.org

By Alexandria Leatherberry The Truth Reporter WGTE Public Media hosted Pour for a Purpose on Saturday, Oct. 4, at The Switchboard in downtown Toledo inviting supporters to enjoy an evening of live music, food, drinks and door prizes.
