NexGen’s mission focuses on incentivizing developers to invest in revitalizing historically significant areas, transforming these communities into thriving hubs of activity and opportunity.

Safford’s dedication to community development was on full display this past July, when he joined former Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman and Columbus civic leader Larry James in hosting a delegation of 50 Toledo community members. The group explored Columbus’s successful urban renewal initiatives, including the transformation of the historic King-Lincoln Bronzeville District, once a vibrant African American cultural hub that had faced decades of neglect.

As host, Safford shared insights into the strategies that revitalized the neighborhood, turning a standard bus tour into an inspirational experience for the Toledo group. Through storytelling and shared experiences, he highlighted the parallels between King-Lincoln Bronzeville and Toledo’s Dorr Street Business District, both of which were once thriving African American communities that experienced economic decline.

“Under Boyce’s leadership, Columbus has become a national model for economic development,” according to four -term former Columbus Mayor Michael B. From 2007 to 2013, he served as director of the Department of Development for Columbus, overseeing city-wide development initiatives. His tenure with the city began in 2001, when he worked as deputy chief of staff to Mayor Coleman, advising on urban development and economic strategies.

One of his hallmark achievements is the revitalization of the King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhood, which was once the cultural and business heart of Columbus’s Black community. The area boasted theaters, jazz clubs, hotels, and thriving businesses that attracted legendary entertainers like Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald. Today, thanks to Safford’s efforts, the district is experiencing a renaissance, blending its rich cultural history with new development.

Boyce Stafford

Bringing Expertise to Toledo

Safford’s visit to Toledo is part of a month-long celebration of the historic Dorr Street community. The African American Legacy Project is working to build community coalitions to pursue opportunities for growth, inclusion and cultural expression. On Monday, February 3, 2025, at 5:30 PM, Safford will bring his wealth of experience to Toledo, speaking at Warren A.M.E.
