You\u2019re not letting go that easily.<\/p>\n

No, you\u2019re on the right side of justice and you\u2019re not letting go of the issue. Your heels are dug in, your back is straight, and your resolve is steely. You have a plan and you\u2019ll keep it, and see it to the end no matter what happens. As in the new book New Prize for These Eyes<\/em> by Juan Williams,<\/strong> there are some who\u2019ve gone before you but your effort is what matters now.<\/p>\n

History disagrees on the exact catalyst for the civil rights movement but Juan Williams says that \u201cthe second Civil Rights Movement\u201d sparked at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and it took less than 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

Not long after young Senator Barack Obama, whose presence was meant to attract Black voters, began his speech at that convention, he had the audience cheering. He was positive, energetic and energizing, and spoke of \u201ca new sense of common purpose,\u201d which spurred a Second Civil Rights Movement and a mandate to \u201cdeal with\u2026 cultural issues that the First Movement had left unresolved\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The speech thrust Obama onto the national stage and, with the endorsement of many old guard Civil Rights Movement figures, ultimately put him in the White House. His presence there wasn\u2019t without issues, both politically and racially, however: the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Philando Castile absolutely affected Obama\u2019s terms, in part because \u201che acted only as a referee\u201d and didn\u2019t \u201ctake any special level of response as a Black man.\u201d Still, early civil rights leaders agreed with him that America was \u201cbetter\u201d then than it was 60 years prior.<\/p>\n

Before Obama\u2019s second term was over, a \u201cright-wing backlash\u201d that was \u201cfueled by grievance\u201d ushered Donald Trump into office but by then, young Black Americans had flocked to social media and gave root to the Black Lives Matter movement. \u201cCovid-19 would also transform\u201d the situation.<\/p>\n

By the summer of 2024, \u201cthe Second Civil Rights Movement was far from completing its agenda,\u201d says Williams, but \u201cit had still achieved remarkable success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Play very close attention while you\u2019re reading this book. It\u2019s filled with politics, but there\u2019s a pay-off in it: author Juan Williams does a little forecasting toward the end of New Prize for These Eyes<\/em>, promising readers a new movement, a third one, to come.<\/p>\n

Even if you\u2019re not particularly a politics-watcher, Williams commands your attention to the last 20 years and how they keenly shaped racism and racial issues in America. Sometimes, he seems to invite argument, using Obama as a singular catalyst for this \u201cSecond\u201d movement and its current continuation, fairly or unfairly; and he places other credits on people and events that will make readers want to find someone to discuss it. The tantalizing idea of a third movement will only underscore that desire.<\/p>\n

As a sequel to Williams\u2019 Eyes on the Prize,<\/em> this is a must-read for anyone who knows where we\u2019ve been or wonders where we\u2019re going. Find New Prize for These Eyes<\/em>.<\/p>\n

You won\u2019t want to let it go.<\/p>\n
