And their works continue to be celebrated nationwide. But, adding to the mystique of America&#8217;s racial health disparities, they&#8217;ve all died of complications related to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, the most common form of dementia that affects memory, thinking and behavior.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Charles Ogletree, founder of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School, was beloved in the civil rights community. Upon his death, he was described by Harvard as \u201can intellectual giant, an incredible humanitarian, and a legendary teacher, whose contributions to law and to racial equality were unparalleled\u201d. Among his chief causes was justice for the survivors and descendants of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Ogletree died of Alzheimer\u2019s last year at the age of 71.<\/li>\n<li>Lani Guinier was a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 when she became nationally renowned after President Bill Clinton nominated her as assistant attorney general for civil rights. Following a two-\n<figure id=\"attachment_13784\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13784\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-13784\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Charles-Ogletree-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Charles-Ogletree-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Charles-Ogletree-45x45.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13784\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles Ogletree<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>month battle by Republican senators against the nomination because of her views on voting rights and racial inclusion, Clinton ultimately pulled the nomination. Guinier, a lawyer, author, activist and educator who had become the first Black woman to receive tenure at Harvard Law School, died from complications of Alzheimer&#8217;s in 2022. Guinier was 71.<\/li>\n<li>Likewise, renowned psychologist and dynamic motivational speaker Julia Ann Reed Hare, who with her beloved husband, Nathan Hare, founded the Black Think Tank in San Francisco, was revered for her insightful commentary on race and racism in America. Their focus on issues affecting Black love relationships and the Black family received wide acclaim. Upon her death from Alzheimer\u2019s at the age of 80 in 2019, Kwanzaa founder Maulana Karenga described Julia Hare as a \u201crighteous and relentless servant of her people.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>There was also B. Smith, beloved for her reputation as a genius cook, entertaining and home furnishing guru as well as a professional model. Her B. Smith restaurants drew the rich and famous and people from every walk of life to enjoy her soul food cuisine in New York City and Washington, D.C. The former Ebony Fashion Fair Model became the first African American to be featured on the cover of Mademoiselle magazine in 1976. She died of Alzheimer\u2019s in 2020 at the age of 70.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-13785 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Dr.-Julia-Hare-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Dr.-Julia-Hare-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Dr.-Julia-Hare-45x45.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The deaths of these four African American moguls from Alzheimer\u2019s illustrate the indiscriminate nature of this brain health disease, which is one of the top 10 causes of death in America. Researchers project that will increase to 16 million by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>So, where\u2019s the hope? They include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Volunteers are needed in Alzheimer\u2019s disease research studies. The National Institute of Health stresses the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/h7n46jcab.cc.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001auewV2Ps9VvpqpFbFUjp3WzGaqs1Fr_3v9Cp3W4gPWygHs6VovUGhGB_n9Y_EclkxqCjC9qumRFHckVWtVqmbpEfrocXgibkr1GhWeOav92KYeJZSMaiTMQMVFluMcvqB2LDLE0wQJHBAQyAdQCrr5J73wUErNXoxYfj5Rj0WhzGM4_x0ORWbBG_cntEv616lRSY2kLpNalZ5bg27-qFQxJHqrVy6BUvdMxtFGgIDM2Jimu1_Sf3ko4unE2vWOEnykbfhWuO7bdVu8zbp9tT08ia9UzZzeANXMarF58T_POxDlvkXASNheyeM4nj5S8ODx45Qge7OvKp_kGeAE3B7eWHchyecIWAB75leS7Rhk8ywxoXCYpWNbG7_7dSuskB0wDmZb-Z6wHNyndnA-mXIsM-YYniCHslZ0ZEP7IwmPClPdY7enFB6MivRsS6hlPMffaEgxptxGEy38IzZZ9bm2S3cQpRbh3H_vue8dVrJDL5-4R5Ew37OHeRkoqQz3bkU7Zswdy_6j9rVLiT7NEYf33PhFqztNAqBoeH7FW5-JHgKVBKJ1TAlabfRjojWzacFcSN7shhVGBfPWn3K1sd8e_3EOzKhmZP3fhW7DeBNcdzlBXgB_-t3v2MoO5xLnfYgZi1fJQSx7fpis66k_N4QQ4VRP5I4UqYBWWmxiub-GIbqkM0xdkiRGLK1OGtpzy1k3PscN2GZDJlZsDppjK15uNBILvOzMw1&amp;c=r185VeI5GcAS25CpfaxImYPLXazMQJeJhlB80QPP9f_hONHDf6ALcw==&amp;ch=m0hLDUvYTq-3_ulSUiEXUu4ZTqHARJ7Be3E1Oa1RslzmPSrQyOCIGg==\">need for more African American participants<\/a>in research. Despite the high prevalence of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and related dementias (ADRD) in the Black community \u201crecent estimates suggest research enrollment by those who identify as African American remains limited.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>African Americans are also needed to participate in research that includes clinical trials. The NIH reports that only 2.4 percent of ADRD trial enrollees identify as Black or African American.
