{"id":11364,"date":"2024-03-07T17:05:24","date_gmt":"2024-03-07T17:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/?p=11364"},"modified":"2024-03-07T17:05:24","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T17:05:24","slug":"two-women-entrepreneurs-offer-more-choices-for-health-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/07\/two-women-entrepreneurs-offer-more-choices-for-health-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Women Entrepreneurs Offer More Choices for Health Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_11365\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11365\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11365\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Iesha-Austin-and-Krystal-Jones-Shephard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Iesha Austin and Krystal Jones-Shephard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><strong>The Truth Staff<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Iesha Austin and Krystal Jones-Shephard have opened new health care businesses on Eastgate Road in order to provide a wide range of services for the Black underserved population of the Toledo area.<\/p>\n<p>Austin\u2019s Salubrious WellCare provides psychiatric services to those \u201cwho are struggling with mental health issues or those transitioning from drugs and alcohol,\u201d said Austin. \u201cI am the youngest to open a psychiatric clinic,\u201d said the then 30-year old nurse practitioner, who holds a degree in healthcare management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to bring more awareness and care to the African American community who seem to struggle in that area because of the stigma \u2026 a lot of us are scared to go see primary care \u2026 because of things we heard growing up in our culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones-Shephard\u2019s Shephard\u2019s Geriatric Care is sharing the space with Salubrious WellCare at 1850 Eastgate Road, Suite B.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hear a lot of \u2018I don\u2019t trust my provider because they don\u2019t look like me,\u2019\u201d said Jones-Shephard, who has 15 years of experience as a registered nurse. \u201cThe motivating factor was to be a provider that looks like the population I want to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mistrust of the healthcare system is in great part due to the fact that the medical establishment has a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medical_Apartheid\">long history<\/a>\u00a0of mistreating Black Americans \u2014 from gruesome experiments on enslaved people to the forced sterilizations of Black women and the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study that withheld treatment from hundreds of Black men for decades to let doctors track the course of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Even today, studies have found Black Americans are consistently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22239747\/\">undertreated for pain<\/a>\u00a0relative to white patients; one study revealed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/113\/16\/4296\">half of medical students and residents<\/a>\u00a0held one or more false beliefs about supposed biological differences between Black and white patients, such as Black patients have higher pain tolerance than white ones (The Commonwealth Fund)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal is for people to come into the office and feel safer and for me to go into people\u2019s homes and be respectful and provide care,\u201d said Jones-Shephard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Truth Staff Iesha Austin and Krystal Jones-Shephard have opened new health care businesses on Eastgate Road in order to provide a wide range of services for the Black underserved population of the Toledo area.
