{"id":11174,"date":"2024-02-15T14:46:47","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T14:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/?p=11174"},"modified":"2024-02-15T14:46:47","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T14:46:47","slug":"black-history-spotlighted-in-zora-neal-hurston-stage-showcase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/15\/black-history-spotlighted-in-zora-neal-hurston-stage-showcase\/","title":{"rendered":"Black History Spotlighted in Zora Neal Hurston Stage Showcase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Northwest Ohio\u2019s oldest independent Black theatre organization will observe Black History Month by bringing a classic author\u2019s work to the Maumee Indoor Theater Feb. 16-17.<\/p>\n<p>New Works Writers Series will present two 8 p.m. performances of \u201cTales of Zora Neal Hurston\u201d Friday and Saturday at the venue, located at 601 Conant St.<\/p>\n<p>The live show marks the second production in an exciting, year-long partnership that brings New Works\u2019 talent to the attention of audiences at the historic Maumee landmark, says Dr. Imelda Hunt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe encourage old and new patrons of the Maumee Indoor Theater, along with New Works Writers Series supporters, to enjoy this show,\u201d adds Hunt, New Works\u2019 founder and artistic director. \u201cZora Neal Hurston\u2019s work has placed her among not only the greatest Black storytellers, but among the storytellers Americans continue to discover decades after her death. Black History Month is a great opportunity to introduce her work in a live performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Best known for her 1937 novel, <em>Their Eyes Were Watching God<\/em>, which was made into a TV film starring actress Halle Berry, Hurston also wrote at least 50 short stories, plays and essays.
