The Supreme Court\u2019s recent decisions against
\naffirmative action, LGBTQ+ rights, and student loan forgiveness were some
\nof the most troubling and harmful rulings that the Court has issued in
\ndecades, said National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) President and CEO Lisa
\nRice. Read her full statement below.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith this regressive set of rulings against affirmative action, LGBTQ+
\nrights, and student loan forgiveness, this Supreme Court issues decisions
\nthat will entrench bias, discrimination, and disturbing disparities and
\nlead our society toward inequity and injustice.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn its 6-3 ruling against affirmative action plans at Harvard and
\nUniversity of North Carolina, the Court ignored nearly 50 years of
\nprecedent and the lower court\u2019s factual analysis. It also ignored stark
\ntruths about systems of bias, created by centuries of race-based laws and
\npolicies, that still harm millions of people every day. For example, high
\nlevels of school segregation still exist in this nation with predominately
\nBlack and Latino school districts receiving, annually, about $23 billion
\nless than predominately White school districts even though they educate
\nroughly the same number of students. School segregation is deeply driven by
\nresidential segregation. Our neighborhoods are more segregated today than
\nthey were 100 years ago, and communities of color have far fewer resources
\nand amenities than do predominately White communities. Those amenities
\ninclude clean land, air, and water; healthcare facilities; internet
\nservices; full-service grocery stores; banks and credit unions; and the
\nlike.<\/p>\n

“It is important to note that the Court\u2019s ruling is limited, only
\napplying to those universities, and is not an outright ban on affirmative
\naction in college admissions. In another disappointing and alarming turn of
\nevents, the Court\u2019s decision in _303 Creative v. Elenis_ essentially
\ngives some businesses cart blanche to discriminate against LGBTQ+
\nindividuals under the guise of protecting free speech, and the case
\npresents ethical standing questions. Finally, the Court\u2019s decision to
\nblock President Biden\u2019s student loan forgiveness plan will prevent
\nmillions of Americans from gaining the financial freedom from the burden of
\nstudent loan debt that they need to buy a home, start a business, or just
\nthrive. The decision presents a particular hardship for women and students
\nof color \u2014 especially Black students \u2014 and will hamper equitable growth
\nin the economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis trilogy of disturbing rulings from the Court\u2019s 6-3
\nultra-conservative majority provides further motivation to redouble our
\nadvocacy efforts to ensure that the promises of the nation\u2019s principles
\nof justice and liberty reach everyone. Now is not the time to retreat;
\nrather, we must boldly advance equitable opportunities so that we may all
\nthrive, our nation can be productive, and our economy can flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
