{"id":6635,"date":"2022-10-27T11:49:18","date_gmt":"2022-10-27T11:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/?p=6635"},"modified":"2022-10-27T11:49:18","modified_gmt":"2022-10-27T11:49:18","slug":"the-coalition-for-peaceful-toledo-neighborhoods-starts-community-town-halls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/27\/the-coalition-for-peaceful-toledo-neighborhoods-starts-community-town-halls\/","title":{"rendered":"The Coalition for Peaceful Toledo Neighborhoods Starts Community Town Halls"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_6636\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6636\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6636\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Bishop-Holt-speaks-as-Carty-Finkbeiner-stand-by-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Bishop-Holt-speaks-as-Carty-Finkbeiner-stand-by-300x216.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Bishop-Holt-speaks-as-Carty-Finkbeiner-stand-by-347x250.jpg 347w, http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Bishop-Holt-speaks-as-Carty-Finkbeiner-stand-by.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6636\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bishop Holt speaks as Carty Finkbeiner stand by<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><strong>The Truth Staff<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Led by former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner, a number of community and religious leaders gathered at Epworth United Methodist Church on Monday, October 24 to express their dismay at the current level of violent crime here in Toledo and to lay out a gameplan to help the city curb that violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery life is important and every life that is lost to gun violence diminishes every single one of us,\u201d said Steve Swisher, senior pastor of Epworth United as he opened Monday\u2019s press conference and announced a community town hall meeting this Thursday at Epworth United that will try to define the next steps in the movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverywhere I travel, people say \u2018you\u2019re from Holy Toledo,\u2019\u201d Swisher continued. \u201cThat\u2019s a great cute phrase but I wonder how effective that is if we are not using that platform to raise the community \u2026 Holy Toledo isn\u2019t working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s make that \u2018Holy Toledo\u2019 count for something,\u201d added Finkbeiner as he recognized some of the others present who will be part of the Coalition\u2019s efforts to stem violence including Baldemar Velasquez, Bishop Marjorie Holt, Toni Moore, Alphonso Narvaez, Jose Montalvo, June Boyd, Harvey Savage, Erika White, Bob Reinbolt, Luis Santiago, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Finkbeiner emphasized the importance of holding the judicial system accountable for meting out appropriate sanctions and punishment to fit the crime while noting that too often unjustly harsh sentences are handed out for minor offenses such as marijuana possession while violent offenders are released too soon into the communities they have just terrorized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing that helps stem violence is to take away the frustrations of those on the bottom of the heap,\u201d said Velasquez during his time at the microphone. \u201cGive them choices by creating jobs and opportunities \u2013 we have to do the hard work to create those options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such sentiments were echoed by the speakers who followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we ready? Are we committed to making Toledo holy again?\u201d asked Bishop Holt. \u201cWe have got to get back to the hub. Let\u2019s do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Coalition announced a number of steps that they feel will be necessary to \u201csaving lives and stopping violence:\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating a citywide plan for engaging citizens in safe meaningful ways \u2013 reintroduce neighborhood watch programs;<\/li>\n<li>Getting police officers to engage in community-based policing, working side-by-side with neighborhood residents;<\/li>\n<li>Working with law enforcement, the Coalition will identify places and people driving the violence, surround and arrest them;<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging anti-violence education and workshops to be offered in schools, churches and civic organizations;<\/li>\n<li>Assisting the city in finding 1,000 youth jobs during the summer months<\/li>\n<li>Noting that churches are a centerpiece for the above programs;<\/li>\n<li>Asking the judicial system to review current sentencing systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thursday community town hall meeting is the first scheduled in what will be a series held throughout the city.
