{"id":6112,"date":"2022-09-07T19:23:38","date_gmt":"2022-09-07T19:23:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/?p=6112"},"modified":"2022-09-07T19:23:38","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T19:23:38","slug":"local-university-receives-over-50-million-in-sponsored-research-and-external-funding-in-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/index.php\/2022\/09\/07\/local-university-receives-over-50-million-in-sponsored-research-and-external-funding-in-last-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Local University Receives over 50 Million in Sponsored Research and External Funding in Last Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Special to The Truth<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Central State University faculty and staff set a new<br \/>\nschool record in sponsored research and external funding for the third<br \/>\nconsecutive year by earning over 50 million during the 2021-22 fiscal year.<br \/>\nCSU shattered the previous benchmark of 26.7 million dollars achieved in<br \/>\nfiscal year 2020-21.<\/p>\n<p>The historic achievement is consistent the<br \/>\nuniversity\u2019s explosive growth in annual sponsored research and external<br \/>\nfunding. \u00a0Central State\u2019s external funding has increased by over 137 percent<br \/>\nover the last three years from 21.1 million dollars in 2019 &#8211; 2020 to 50.05<br \/>\nmillion dollars in 2021 &#8211; 2022. The total does not include any CARES Act<br \/>\nfunding awarded to universities in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sustained growth demonstrates that CSU\u2019s core value of academic<br \/>\nexcellence infused through the efforts of our faculty and staff is being<br \/>\nrecognized by funding agencies\u201d said CSU President Jack Thomas, PhD. The<br \/>\nrecord-breaking achievement advances the presidential priority to continue<br \/>\nto meet and enhance CSU\u2019s 1890 Land-Grant mission of conducting cutting<br \/>\nedge research and using gained knowledge to address societal problems<br \/>\nthrough extension services according to Thomas. The growth in research<br \/>\nfunding is part of CSU\u2019s goal to attain a \u201cResearch Two\u201d designation<br \/>\nas a high research institution within the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch and other externally funded activities provide tremendous<br \/>\nopportunities for faculty, students, and staff to engage in scholarly<br \/>\nactivities outside the traditional classroom settings\u201d said F. Erik<br \/>\nBrooks, PhD, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. \u00a0\u201cProjects<br \/>\nfunded will enhance CSU\u2019s physical and human infrastructure including<br \/>\nstate of the art equipment, upgraded facilities, technology, new faculty<br \/>\nand staff, professional development, and training opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCSU faculty and staff are being recognized for our rigorous pursuit of<br \/>\nknowledge that addresses societal concerns\u201d says Morakinyo A.O. Kuti, PhD,<br \/>\nassociate provost for Research. \u201cThe record setting amount demonstrates<br \/>\nthat CSU is taking our rightful place as an institution of higher education<br \/>\ndedicated to improving the communities and society locally and globally<br \/>\nthrough evidenced based activities,\u201d Kuti commented. \u201cCSU is especially<br \/>\nproud of the inclusion of students in our efforts as it provides<br \/>\nexperiential learning opportunities vital for their academic success and<br \/>\nfuture professional careers,\u201d said Kuti.<\/p>\n<p>Major projects funded this year include the following:<\/p>\n<p>Ten million dollars from the US Department of Agriculture for the<br \/>\n\u201cSustainable Aquaculture Production of High Omega 3 Containing Fish Using<br \/>\na Novel Feed Additive\u201d The project is led by Brandy E. Phipps, PI, PhD,<br \/>\nCraig Schluttenhofer, PhD, and Krishna Kumar Nedunuri, Ph.D. (Co-PIs).<br \/>\nProject goals include researching the potential use of hemp as an<br \/>\naquaculture feed, training and equipping new aquaculture producers,<br \/>\nincreasing local production of produce and healthy fish, provide workforce<br \/>\ntraining for Native American and African American graduates.<\/p>\n<p>3,582,160 dollars from the U.S. Department of Commerce for the Central<br \/>\nState University Workforce Training and Business Development Center. The<br \/>\nproject is led by Morakinyo Kuti, PhD, with a team of faculty including<br \/>\nFred Aikens, PhD; Arunasalam Rahunanthan, PhD; Mahmoud Abdallah, PhD; Ramani<br \/>\nKandiah, PhD; Abayomi Ajayi-Majebi, PhD. and Sal Almestiri, PhD. The goal of the<br \/>\nproject is to establish a Workforce Training and Business Development<br \/>\nCenter that will serve underserved communities in Clark, Greene, and<br \/>\nMontgomery counties.<\/p>\n<p>A grant of 599,982 dollars from the US Department of Agriculture for &#8220;Development of a<br \/>\nHolistic Nano Photocatalytic Approach for Controlling<br \/>\nAgriculturally-Induced Algal Blooms and Associated Cyanotoxins in Lake&#8221;.<br \/>\nNing Zhang, PhD, serves as the project director. The goal of the project is<br \/>\nto build CSU with research capacity on developing and expanding<br \/>\neconomically viable and environmentally compatible water treatment<br \/>\ntechnology, through developing advanced oxidation process for microcystins<br \/>\ndestruction.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 597,461 dollars from the US Department of Agriculture grant for<br \/>\n\u201cIntroducing Ergonomics Safety in Agriculture Production through Use of a<br \/>\nMovement Studies Lab\u201d project. Kathy Carter, PhD, serves as the project<br \/>\ndirector. The project aims to expand exercise science (EXS) research to<br \/>\ninclude the ergonomics of farm safety, as well as develop an ergonomics<br \/>\ncurriculum within the EXS program.<\/p>\n<p>A grant worth 538,986 dollars from the US Department of Agriculture for the<br \/>\n\u201cFastrack Farming: \u00a0A Training Program for Socially Disadvantaged and<br \/>\nMilitary Veteran Beginning Farmers during the COVID 19 Pandemic.\u201d<br \/>\nSiddhartha Dasgupta, PhD, serves as the project director.
