Frank Troy Senior Center to emphasize the merits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for the elderly residents of the Toledo area and to encourage these residents and their families to take advantage of a program that can provide invaluable nutritional and health benefits of the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many elderly in this area are not participating,\u201d said Billie Johnson, president and CEO of the Area Office on Aging as she opened the press conference.\u00a0 \u201cSome are too ashamed to let their families know,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Harris, chairman of the Area Office in Aging board of directors, said: \u201cIt is ironic that the United States of America, the breadbasket of the world, has a problem with food insecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3367\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3367\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3367\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Mayor-Wade-Kapszukiewicz-addresses-SNAP-availability.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"189\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz addresses SNAP availability<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SNAP is a federal program, the largest program working to fight hunger in the United States. Approximately 5.1 million older adult households use SNAP but more than half of those who qualify for SNAP are not enrolled in the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSNAP is not new and we hope it will remain for a while,\u201d said Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz as he opened his remarks. He explained that \u201cthe reason we are holding [this press conference] is that a high percentage of seniors in our community aren\u2019t taking advantage of this program \u2026 we have to overcome a sense of shame that maybe older generations have \u2026 hunger and food insecurity is always heartbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe provide a large number of health care services to those who have trouble accessing such services,\u201d said Doni Miller, CEO of Neighborhood Health Association as she emphasized the \u201cimportance of food on the quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also echoed other speakers about the difficulties older generations have overcoming their pride and asking for help. \u201cA big part is getting folks who are uncomfortable with reaching out to seek help and getting to those who don\u2019t know it\u2019s available \u2013 the long-term ramifications are much too significant.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3365\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3365\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3365\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.thetruthtoledo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AOoA-CEO-Billie-Johnson-and-Tina-Williams-Director-of-Nutrition-and-Wellness-Program-for-AOoA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"233\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AOoA CEO Billie Johnson and Tina Williams, Director of Nutrition and Wellness Program for AOoA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SNAP is available to the most at-risk citizens, including elderly and disabled.
