Toledo, OH \u2013 Toledo Opera will present Giuseppe Verdi\u2019s Aida <\/em>on Friday, October 16, 2026 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, October 18, 2026 at 2 p.m., at the Valentine Theatre, 400 North Superior, Toledo, Ohio. Presented for the first time in over a decade, this new production features a distinguished cast of returning favorites and world-class artists, underscoring Toledo Opera\u2019s reputation for artistic excellence. Toledo Opera will also host a free Pre-Opera Talk one hour before each show in the Grand Lobby of the Valentine Theatre. Professor of Musicology at Bowling Green State University, Dr. Eftychia Papanikolaou, Ph.D., will provide historical context and insight and will be available to take questions after the talk.<\/p>\n

Aida <\/em>tells the story of a love caught between loyalty, duty, and war. Aida, an Ethiopian princess captured and forced into slavery in Egypt, secretly loves Radam\u00e8s, the Egyptian military commander chosen to lead his country into battle against her homeland. Their love becomes even more complicated when Amneris, the daughter of the Egyptian king, also loves Radam\u00e8s; and Aida must choose between her love for him and her devotion to her country. Set against a backdrop of military conflict, political power, and religious ceremony, Verdi\u2019s monumental masterpiece explores the devastating consequences of a love divided by duty and allegiance.<\/p>\n

Premiered at the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo in 1871, Aida <\/em>was commissioned to celebrate the opening of a new opera house, although its premiere was delayed by the Franco-Prussian War. The opera quickly became one of Verdi\u2019s most celebrated works, admired for its sweeping melodies, richly orchestrated score, dramatic choruses, and intimate portrayal of its central characters. While often associated with spectacular staging and grand processions, Aida <\/em>balances its epic scale with deeply personal moments of love, jealousy, sacrifice, and loss. The opera remains one of the most frequently performed works in the operatic repertoire and is particularly renowned for its powerful ensembles, monumental choruses, and the famous triumphal scene.<\/p>\n

Aida<\/em> also holds a special place in Toledo Opera\u2019s history: it was the company\u2019s inaugural production when Toledo Opera opened in 1959. Presented at the Paramount Theatre, the production marked the beginning of Toledo Opera\u2019s more than six decades of bringing opera to audiences throughout the Toledo region.<\/p>\n

Aida<\/em> will be brought to life by conductor Adam Turner<\/strong>, who returns for his fourth season with Toledo Opera after conducting the company\u2019s 2025 production of Carmen<\/em>. Stage director Linda Brovsky<\/strong> and choreographer Matthew Steffens<\/strong> join Turner to bring Verdi\u2019s monumental work to the stage. Aida<\/em> will star Mary Elizabeth Williams<\/strong> as Aida, Brendan Boyle<\/strong> (Carmen<\/em>, Tosca<\/em>, and Ragtime<\/em> with Toledo Opera) as Radam\u00e8s, Lauren Decker<\/strong> (Suor Angelica<\/em> and Cavalleria Rusticana<\/em> with Toledo Opera) as Amneris, and Nmon Ford<\/strong> as Amonasro. Aida<\/em> will be presented in Italian with English captions.<\/p>\n

Celebrated American soprano Mary Elizabeth Williams<\/strong> makes her Toledo Opera debut in the title role of Aida<\/em>. An internationally acclaimed artist, Williams has performed leading roles at some of the world\u2019s most renowned opera houses, including Teatro alla Scala, l\u2019Op\u00e9ra National de Paris, Canadian Opera Company, Seattle Opera, Welsh National Opera, and La Monnaie. She has become particularly known for her portrayals of iconic Italian heroines, including Aida, Tosca, and Abigaille in Nabucco<\/em>, while her expanding repertoire also encompasses contemporary works. In addition to her work on stage, Williams is a published writer, accomplished teacher and lecturer, and passionate advocate for greater access to opera. She earned her MBA in Arts Innovation from the Global Leaders Institute in 2026 and currently serves as Opera Baltimore\u2019s Director of Artistic Access.<\/p>\n

Tenor Brendan Boyle<\/strong> returns to Toledo Opera as Radam\u00e8s in Aida<\/em>, continuing a strong relationship with the company that began as a Toledo Opera Resident Artist in 2022\u201323. Since then, he has returned to Toledo to perform Father in Ragtime<\/em>, Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca<\/em>, and Don Jos\u00e9 in Carmen<\/em>. The Toledo Blade praised his performance in Tosca<\/em>, noting that his \u201cstar\u2026shines brightly\u201d and highlighting his \u201cstrong and rich tenor voice\u201d and \u201cheroic\u201d stage presence. Hailing from Kansas, Boyle has built a diverse repertoire ranging from romantic leading roles such as Rodolfo in Puccini\u2019s La Boh\u00e8me<\/em> to demanding dramatic roles, earning recognition for his powerful voice and compelling characterizations.<\/p>\n

Mezzo-soprano Lauren Decker<\/strong> and Panamanian-American baritone Nmon Ford<\/strong> join the cast as Amneris and Amonasro in Aida<\/em>. Decker, known for her powerful contralto and distinctive \u201camber low notes,\u201d has performed with Deutsche Oper Berlin and Lyric Opera of Chicago and will make her Metropolitan Opera debut this season. Ford has built an acclaimed international career in dramatic repertoire, with appearances at the Metropolitan Opera, English National Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Detroit Opera, and Hamburg State Opera. His repertoire includes demanding roles such as Jochanaan in Salome<\/em>, Iago in Otello<\/em>, Escamillo in Carmen<\/em>, and the title role of Don Giovanni<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Also joining the cast are bass-baritone and Toledo Opera Resident Artist Timothy Krueger<\/strong> as the King of Egypt; tenor and Toledo Opera Resident Artist Jeremy Do<\/strong> as the Messenger; and soprano and Toledo Opera Resident Artist Jenna Grissom<\/strong> as the High Priestess.<\/p>\n

The Aida<\/em> ensemble features an accomplished group of professional dancers: Nicholas Sipes, Ryan Lindeman, Jasmine Ward, Maurice Ivy, Mike Baerga, and Holly Wilder<\/strong>. Their collective credits include performances with the Metropolitan Opera, Pennsylvania Ballet, New York Theatre Ballet, and Se\u00e1n Curran Company, as well as Broadway productions including Wicked<\/em>, The Cher Show<\/em>, Moulin Rouge!<\/em>, The Heart of Rock and Roll<\/em>, King Kong<\/em>, and Miss Saigon<\/em>. The dancers have also appeared on national tours, in film and television, and with opera companies including LA Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Dallas Opera, and Washington National Opera, bringing a wealth of dance, musical theatre, and operatic experience to Toledo Opera\u2019s production.<\/p>\n

The production will also feature the Toledo Opera Chorus<\/strong>, bringing its powerful sound and longstanding connection to the company to the stage. Composed of professional and community singers from across the region, the chorus has been an integral part of Toledo Opera productions for more than six decades and will join the cast and orchestra in bringing Verdi\u2019s monumental score to life.<\/p>\n

Toledo Opera will also offer a series of companion events surrounding Aida, including Get Into the Spirit of Opera<\/strong>, Aida: Homelands<\/strong>, Aida All Access<\/strong>, and Sunday Fun-Day Brunch<\/strong>. The programs will explore the opera\u2019s music, history, culture, and themes through community gatherings, educational conversations, live performances, and culinary experiences.<\/p>\n
