Debutantes perform – Introducing me to you and my mirror<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Truth Staff<\/em><\/p>\n

The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women\u2019s Clubs, Toledo Club, brought together the 2026 Debutantes for a Females Empowerment Event on Saturday, March 14, in order to explore an \u201cUnderstanding My Who & Why.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event, which united female mentors and role models with young ladies, took place at Vista on the Docks and for both the attendees and the room d\u00e9cor the color of the day was a brilliant yellow.<\/p>\n

Pastor Marquisa Horton served as the mistress of ceremonies and attendees were greeted by Club President Tyra Smith-Williamson and NANBPWC District Governor Denise Black-Poon.<\/p>\n

Marcel Hampton, the only area Black female chiropractor, sang \u201cLift Ev\u2019ry Voice and Sing,\u201d after which the 2016 Debutantes performed an ice breaker exercise by \u201cintroducing you to me and my mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n

And then, the message of the day was \u201cconfidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daijah Blackburn, Esq, 2016 Debutante, addressed that subject first. \u201cWhere is your confidence?\u201d she asked the young ladies in attendance. \u201cIs it in your clothes, is it in your car, is it in your accomplishments or is it in the people you know?<\/p>\n

\u201cOur confidence must remain firm; our values must remain firm, we were created in the image of God. I am confident because this is my Father\u2019s world,\u201d she added. \u201cI am who I am, where is your confidence?\u201d<\/p>\n

The afternoon keynote speaker, Delvata Moses, PhD, deputy director of Human Relations and Community Services for the City of Lansing, MI, elaborated on this theme.<\/p>\n

Moses spoke of her early years as a child when her intelligence, her outspokenness and even her skin color brought some blowback from others. She retreated, backed away from interactions with others.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the beginning of a pattern, a pattern of questioning myself \u2026 \u2018maybe I should be different,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cI began practicing how to make myself smaller, I learned how to dim my light.\u201d<\/p>\n

But she came back and overcame that doubt and uncertainty. \u201cI made me who I am; I may not be everybody\u2019s cup of tea \u2013 that\u2019s why they make coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Encouraging her listeners to walk their own paths, Moses told them \u201cyou are good, no matter what others say.\u201d She also told them that they can create their own feeling of being confidents.<\/p>\n

\u201cConfidence comes from understanding who you are and why you are here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 58th<\/sup> Annual Cotillion Debutante will be held in May 2026.<\/p>\n
