For many people in northwest Ohio, the YWCA Milestones celebration<\/strong> shines as a symbol of impact, leadership and service to the community.<\/p>\n

Each year, the event honors women whose work quietly shapes the region, leaders whose dedication leaves a lasting imprint on the arts, education, business, and beyond.<\/p>\n

This year, Jennifer McCary, DODC, <\/strong>joins that legacy as the event\u2019s Arts Honoree<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a huge honor,\u201d she says softly. \u201cI don\u2019t even know if there are words to describe how I feel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gratitude runs quietly through McCary\u2019s story. It shows up again and again across a career shaped by creativity, leadership and an unwavering commitment to people.<\/p>\n

Where Art and Leadership Meet<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Today, McCary serves as Chief Culture and Brand Experience Officer at the Toledo Museum of Art<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Her work reaches beyond strategy or branding. She helps create the emotional connection visitors feel when they step into the museum and encounter its collections. At the same time, she works behind the scenes, bringing departments together, encouraging collaboration and making sure the museum\u2019s mission guides everyday decisions.<\/p>\n

But before the executive titles and strategic plans, there was something simpler.<\/p>\n

She was an artist.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a Bachelor of Fine Arts,\u201d she explains. \u201cFirst and foremost, I am an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

That creative spark never left.<\/p>\n

Over time, she added new tools to her toolbox. She earned multiple degrees from Bowling Green State University<\/strong>, including a master\u2019s degree in college student personnel and a doctorate in organization development and change.<\/p>\n

Each degree expanded her perspective.<\/p>\n

Art sharpened her ability to see the world differently. Education deepened her understanding of how people grow.
\nLeadership revealed how organizations change, and how culture shapes everything inside them.<\/p>\n

Together, those experiences formed something rare: a leader who understands both creativity and systems.<\/p>\n

So when the Toledo Museum of Art<\/strong> invited her to join the institution, the moment felt full circle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI get to work in a cultural icon,\u201d she adds. \u201cAnd I believe deeply in the mission of integrating art into the everyday lives of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Power of Communication and Collaboration<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At the center of McCary\u2019s leadership philosophy sits a simple truth.<\/p>\n

Communication matters.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommunication is at the heart of everything we do,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

McCary jokes that she sometimes \u201chas difficult conversations for a living.\u201d But those conversations are often where real progress begins. When communication works, something shifts.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are fascinating,\u201d she says with a smile. \u201cAnd that keeps me curious.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Toledo Museum of Art<\/strong> has recently earned national recognition, being named both the Best Free Museum<\/strong> and the Best Museum in the United States<\/strong> for the second year in a row.<\/p>\n

But McCary is already looking toward the future.<\/p>\n

Right now, the museum is in the middle of its most comprehensive gallery reinstallation in nearly a century. The transformation will reshape how visitors move through the galleries and experience the artwork.<\/p>\n

For long-time supporters, the changes may bring a little uncertainty.<\/p>\n

For first-time visitors, the experience may feel entirely new.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m excited to see how people react,\u201d she admits. \u201cBoth the person who has never been here before and the person who already loves the museum.\u201d<\/p>\n

Creating Moments of Wonder<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At the heart of McCary\u2019s work sits a simple hope.<\/p>\n

When someone walks through the museum doors, she wants them to feel welcome.<\/p>\n

Nothing complicated.<\/p>\n
