State Rep. Erika White (D-Springfield Township) Wednesday stood in solidarity with Democratic members of the Texas State Senate alongside dozens of lawmakers from all across the nation in Boston, MA denouncing the undemocratic attempt by Texas Republicans to unfairly redraw the state’s congressional maps to favor Republicans candidates ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Rep. White is in Boston attending the annual National Conference of State Legislatures.

The legacy of the Voting Rights Act calls us to action. It reminds us that representation is not a privilege\u2014it is a right. It must be protected, expanded, and never denied. This week marks the 60th anniversary of the landmark Voting Rights Act, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on August\u202f6,\u202f1965, to ban racial discrimination in voting and ensure federal oversight for states with histories of voter suppression. It stands in strong contrast to President Donald Trump demanding Texas redraw its congressional map and in direct conflict of the principles of fair representation championed by LBJ\u2019s Voting Rights Act by silencing communities through oppressive redistricting by adding five more GOP seats in Texas in the midterm elections to increase Republicans\u2019 chances of holding its slim majority in the U.S. House.
