Earl speaks to youth and adults about negative propaganda and imagery about Blacks in popular culture<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Frederick Douglass Community Association hosted a presentation \u201cThe Culture They Hate,\u201d Wednesday, May 15 at the Doug. The event, presented by Albert Earl, board chair of the FDCA, highlighted the origins and dissemination of negative Black stereotypes in popular culture.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of young people believe in a lot of things that we call a part of \u201cour\u201d culture\u2013 some of that stuff wasn\u2019t invented by us\u2026 a lot of time we participate in things that speak to our demise,\u201d Earl noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I wanted to give them the history on it… We didn\u2019t invent the strip culture and violent culture; this was a carefully orchestrated plan, and we need to be mindful of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

‘The Culture They Hate’ is an interactive presentation that explores the history of how propaganda was weaponized and used to justify the treatment and dehumanization of certain groups and how these same tools are being used today to influence violence, hypersexuality, and drug addictive behavior. It also reveals the negative impact on how groups are viewed, policed, educated and what we must do immediately to have any impact on progressive change.<\/p>\n

Youth from the Fredrick Douglass Community Association\u2019s programs, adults, and members from the NAACP were present for the engaging presentation that covered topics from Jim Crow to urban renewal, the drug war, the prison industrial complex and more.<\/p>\n

The conclusion presented included:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Protect our children from the influences;<\/li>\n
  2. Take education back;<\/li>\n
  3. Commit to collective work;<\/li>\n
  4. Stop allowing other groups to infiltrate and hijack our movements;<\/li>\n
  5. Don\u2019t assist in your own oppression.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u201cWe\u2019ve got to take education back for our children. What we know that they\u2019re not teaching them\u2014 we need to teach them,\u201d stated Earl.<\/p>\n

    Earl, has been giving a similar talk for over 20 years. \u201cSomethings have changed and somethings are progressively getting worse,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIt\u2019s because we\u2019re not doing things like this enough. That\u2019s what inspired having these conversations. We have to steady be in our kids\u2019 faces because the devil is not taking a day off.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/p>\n

    \u201c[The aim is that ] our kids learn, the community embraces some of the conversations and we begin to do some more collective work together,\u201d said Earl.<\/p>\n

    The previous week, Maurice Morris, held a \u2018Home Safe\u2019 presentation at The Doug teaching how to interact with the police to make sure you get home safe. His talk was the first talk of the series that will be held at the Doug.<\/p>\n
