Rob Shorter Is Back at Work on His Art<\/strong>
\n\u201cI\u2019ve always loved to draw,\u201d says Robert Shorter. \u201cIn the beginning I did quite a bit of oil paintings on canvas, but clean up and space were always issues. I found over time that I was able to draw and achieve the results I wanted without the clean up problems using color pencils. I eventually taught myself to \u2018paint\u2019 with pencils. The richness of Prismacolor pencils allows me to capture any subject in the vivid colors of oils without the sometimes messy cleanup.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shorter began his art studies at The Toledo Museum of Art at an early age and art remained the focus of his formal education.<\/p>\n

He attended Libbey High School and won numerous state scholastic art awards and then entered Bowling Green State University as an art major.<\/p>\n

Life and work took the aspiring artist in another direction however. He became a civil structural engineer and, with a partner, formed a company \u2013 Morse and Shorter \u2013 to continue in that field.<\/p>\n

Most of Shorter\u2019s daytime gig involved, as he notes, \u201cworking with my eyes.\u201d So it was fairly difficult to give his art the attention he thought it required after days spent assessing and competing projects requiring such concentration of mind and eye.<\/p>\n

Morse and Shorter gave up the firm a year ago as both partners went into retirement and Shorter began to place more emphasis on his avocation \u2013 his art. He had kept his hand in art doing commissioned pieces from time to time but now he is free to let his imagination roam.<\/p>\n

Over the years, he has created a number of such commissioned works of athletes. Some of his recent drawings include several works of President Obama and depictions of equine athletes for 20 North Gallery\u2019s Derby Days Exhibit.<\/p>\n
